BOOK SYNOPSIS
The Mayflower sailed in 1620, and Jamestown was founded in 1607. The French ancestors of the Cajuns (and many Creoles) however, arrived in 1604, in what is now called Nova Scotia. Those early French colonists originally named the area Acadie, and "Cajun" is a corruption of "Acadian."
Over the past few years, the Cajuns and Creoles have exploded onto the national and international scene. But they have recently realized that they are losing much of their culture in the transition, including their language. Currently French immersion is one of the hottest educational initiatives in south Louisiana, as the Cajuns and Creoles try to revive a language that was quite near rigor mortis.
This book is our contribution to raising Lazare. There were so many beautiful names of previous generations which were ejected with the other cultural antiques. Today in south Louisiana we make jokes about people named Th--‚©ophile and Alcide, without knowing that St. Luke addressed his whole Gospel to a man "loved by God," and ignorant that one of Hercules' names was derived from his having been born into the house of the Perseid Alcaeus. That is a pity, and this book seeks to address that lost knowledge.
