BOOK SUMMARY
A collection of the best schalorly material on the French colonial experience in Louisiana.

BOOK SYNOPSIS
Beginning with pioneers like N. M. Miller Surrey, Marcel Giraud, and Charles O'Neill, French colonial historians of the last third of the twentieth century have produced a new historiography. This volume is designed to bring before interested readers this fresh, sometimes revealing, but always thoughtful scholarship.

This volume incorporates the very best of the new scholarship on French Louisiana. The volume's component articles are grouped into sections entitled French Colonial Policy and Louisiana; Europeanization of French Louisiana; Africans, Slaves, Slavery, and Manumissions; The French and Native Americans; Soldiers, Fortifications, and Mercenaries; Administration of French Louisiana; French Law, Religion, and Morality; Louisiana's Nascent Economy; and The End of French Louisiana.

It is to be hoped that the reader will come away from this volume with a better understanding of the complexities of the French experience in Louisiana and a better appreciation of the contribution of scholars who, employing ever-evolving historical methodology, have set firmly the French building block in the structure of our state's heritage.
