REMEMBERING CASS ELLIOT
So enormous
some called her a house,
roomy, especially her spirit--†â€™Ãƒâ€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢--¢â‚'ƒâ€šÃ‚¢--†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢'‚'‚¬Ã…¡--¢â‚'ƒâ€šÃ‚¬--†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢'€šÂ¬Ã…¡Ã‚¬?
always someplace
to go and relax
when she sang,
where the dead grow faces
on dahlia petals
and an innocent yard
hides grassy secrets.
Bodies
go under
earth or
up in flame,
but her voice,
so large,
death can--†â€™Ãƒâ€ Ã¢â‚¬â„¢--¢â‚'ƒâ€šÃ‚¢--†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢'‚'‚¬Ã…¡--¢â‚'ƒâ€šÃ‚¬--†â€™Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¢'‚'‚¬Ã…¾--¢â‚'ƒâ€šÃ‚¢t get
a butterfly net
around it.

BOOK REVIEWS
"Kenneth Pobo's poetry is quite simply eloquent, lyrical and beautifully wrought. Pobo evokes the natural world with a Keatsian "negative capability" eye. He reminds us that man is not the center of the universe. In "Panda Passing," for instance, Pobo allows us to see and feel what it is like to be imprisoned in a zoo, where people stare all day from outside the bars. You become this wounded bear, if only for a moment, as she dies and finally returns to the wind and grass, the "indigo flowers around / her paws...where the sun is gold / straw in an owl's nest." Pobo's poetry appeals to both mind and heart, soul and body-as all good poetry should. His key to this kingdom is compassion. In short, Kenneth Pobo is an exceptionally gifted and clairvoyant poet."
