BOOK SYNOPSIS
The Mermaids and Yellow Jackis the story of how in a city stricken with "yellow jack," the sailors nickname for yellow fever, the tears of a child summon a mermaid named Cara and her sisters to help fight the illness that sailors of that day and age nicknamed "Yellow Jack." This gentle fable blends history with mermaid magic, while telling of how the Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center in Norfolk, Virginia was founded. It also explains why the city today holds a love of both mermaids and yellow flowers. Lisa Suhay, author of There Goes a Mermaid! A NorFolk Tale. teams up with New York illustrator Joan O'Brien to create a richly illustrated and historic tale.
