BOOK REVIEWS
Sylvia Firth - Children's Literature

This paperback collection of twenty-four short stories ranges from the familiar, traditional "Teeny-Tiny" by Joseph Jacobs to a contemporary, cumulative tale by James Reeves called "The Cat and the Mouse." Most of them are only three or four pages long, which make them ideal for reading aloud when a brief activity is needed. Highlighting each story are high-spirited, black-and-white drawings on almost every page. This is an added bonus for older children able to read by themselves. They will surely enjoy seeing a prince with donkey ears growing out of his head or a mailman doing loop the loops in his helicopter as he delivers the mail. The number 19 on the spine indicates that is the latest in the "Kingfisher Treasury Series." Some of the other available titles are illustrated on the front inside cover. While not an essential purchase, it does provide an answer to those in need of a four or five minute classroom break. 2004 (orig. 1992), Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 5 to 8.
